A red-slip Roman oil lamp featuring a discus scene of the Greek symbols Chi and Rho. The Chi-Rho was one of the earliest Christian symbols to be used, representing the first two letters in Christ's name in Greek (Χριστός). Deep ridges decorate the shoulder and two filling holes sit in between the Chi-Rho. Blacked slightly from use. The mould used to make this lamp was also worn, resulting in a weak Chi-Rho impression.

Roman Empire, North Africa, c. 5th-6th century A.D.

N.B. Stand is not included with the object.
