A cast bronze bust in the shape of a bare-chested man with a beard and long hair. Details such as eyes, mouth, hair and pettorals are engraved. The figure, probably a warrior, features two holes at the end of each arms for attachment: the bust could have been used as a pendant. Very fine condition, with traces of green patina and aging on the surface.

The green and fertile site of Marlik, to the south west of the Caspian area, gave rise to a pastoral culture between 12th and the 10th centuries BC. Considerable riches were brought to light by an Iranian expedition in 1961. The artists who fashioned these pieces were certainly from an advanced civilization and had a command of an elaborate technology. The discoveries made so far in this area of Iranian archaeology are only the beginning. This place may not be well endowed with spectacular monuments, but it is rich in treasure filled tombs.

Period: circa 1000 BC
