The use of the poppy as a decorative element, and as an amulet, extends back to the end of the Old Kingdom and was favoured by all levels of society. They reached their peak in popularity during the New Kingdom, particularly during the Amarna Period, (1353-1336 BC), and are commonly made from carnelian, as well as faience.
