    Western Han Dynasty Jar.

    206 BC- A.D 220

Buff earthenware jar; spherical form body giving way to short neck, biconical in section and wide, similarly shaped mouth; broad handle on either side, the lower half of which, on both sides of the handle, forms the tail-end of the two raised spirals moulded onto each face of the jar in middle image. At the centre of each spiral is a pyramidal bronze boss with a band of punched dots just below the peak, which similarly adorn the shoulders, neck and handles. Incised geometric decoration to neck.

Such unusually shaped jars as this were produced in the Han dynasty in Western Sichuan province.
