    The author is director of the Fitch Laboratory in the British School at Athens. This laboratory was established in 1974, through the generosity of Dr. Marc and Mrs. Ismene Fitch, as a small centre for archaeological science, whose activities are closely linked to current archaeological research in the East Mediterranean. Its main interest is the analysis, by chemical and petrological methods, of artefacts, chiefly ceramic, for information on provenance and technology. The laboratory, which has a staff of four, also carries out geophysical prospection at archaeological sites.

    This volume is the first in a series of occasional papers of the Laboratory.
