Highly Unusual Gnathian Epichysis with Fillet
Gnathia, 4th Century BC
Dark-tan clay with black gloss over whole, red-wash in parts and applied white, yellow and maroon decoration; Of atypical form, with reel-shaped body with head and base flange; domed shoulder, cylindrical neck, separating into two branches, one forming the high arched handle, the other the pinched spout; lion-head terminals at point of separation. Decoration consisting of applied white fillet to body, applied egg motif to head flange, pendant grape bunches and tendrils either side of maroon line on shoulder; tongues to neck with row of granules at base.
