Ancient Dog Figurines

Dogs always featured prominently in the Ancient and Classical world. In ancient Egyptian culture and religion, the dog was linked to the dog-jackal god, Anubis. The most famous dog in Greek mythology was the three-headed dog, Cerberus, who guarded the gates of Hades. Ancient Roman culture saw dogs as loyal companions and protectors: the celebrated mosaic from the House of the Tragic Poet in Pompeii, Cave Canem, demonstrates Roman appreciation of dogs as guardians of their homes.
