As well as translucent pieces, our range of ancient Roman glass includes highly iridescent examples, bearing evidence of the chemical reactions from the soil under which they were buried. Ancient glass was used for both practical and decorative purposes within antiquity, just as it is today. From the earliest sand-core containers of Egypt and Greece to the popular mould-blown unguentaria of the Roman Empire, glass vessels were an attractive alternative to pottery.
