Maitreya is a common figure in the sculpture of the Gandharan world. He is a future Buddha, though depicted in the more resplendent dress of a bodhisattva. He is one who will appear, enlightened and teach the pure dharma at the time when most have forgotten it. Many interpret this as referring esoterically to the potential Buddha in all. Maitreya is commonly identified by a flask he holds in his left hand.
