An intricately woven piece of fabric from the Early Christian period in Egypt. The colours used include deep red-brown, black-blue, and a green-beige background colour. The pattern is largely symmetrical and shows a repeated pattern of red crosses and green-beige circles with red horizontal lines.

Egypt’s Copts were some of the world’s earliest Christians and they traditionally believe that Egypt played a large role in Jesus’ life. It is thought that he may have sought refuge here, along with his parents, from King Herod.

The Coptic language is descended from ancient Egyptian and some Greek.
