A good-sized Roman pottery wine amphora. Made of a gritty pale orange clay, the vessel has a spindle-shaped body a relatively tall neck with two handles extending from the shoulders to just below the rim, and tapers to a small knobbed toe.

The amphora was the ubiquitous vessel for the for the transport and storage of various products, both liquid and dry, but mostly for wine. Most, such as this example, were produced with a pointed base to allow upright storage by embedding in soft ground, such as sand. The base facilitated transport by ship, where the amphorae were packed upright...

The base facilitated transport by ship, where the amphorae were packed upright or on their sides in several staggered layers.  

Very Fine condition; with patches of light accretions, more so around one of the handles. 

Eastern Mediterranean: Circa 2nd century AD.
