The name amethyst comes from the Greek, amethystos. Broken down this literaly means 'ἀ- a-, "not" and μεθύσκω methysko / μεθύω methyo, "intoxicate", thus meaning 'not intoxicated'. The Ancient Greeks and Romans therefore believed that amethyst protected against intoxication and bad spells.
