Due to its shape, this pendant may have been intended to evoke the image of the moon, which was highly sacred in Celtic religion (as with many ancient cultures). Celtic worship was closely tied to celestial bodies and features of the natural world, and the lunar cycle was used to determine the timing of religious festivals, as well as practical activities such as the harvest. Evidence of cults associated with the sun and moon has also been found at many Celtic sites.
