Greek Bronze Finger Ring with Intaglio

$180.54

A beautiful Greek bronze finger ring, featuring a round section hoop and a carved bezel, which is decorated with a finely engraved figure of a bare-chested man. The man is shown seated, wearing a long cape and headdress, and holding a staff. Given that these are the typical attributes of Hermes, it is reasonable to suggest that he is the figure depicted.

Internal diameter: 2.2 cm. UK ring size O.

Date: Circa 4th Century AD
Condition: Fine; some signs of ageing; beautiful green patina on the surface.

Hermes (known as Mercury in the Roman canon) was an Olympian deity, whose primary responsibility was as messenger of the gods. Given this association with travel, it comes as little surprise that he was also the god of trade, thieves, and sports, as well as acting as escort to the Underworld.

The image has been carved in intaglio, and would likely have been the seal ring of the original owner.
