Provenanced Roman Lamp with Bird on a Bough

A Roman reddish-brown glazed terracotta oil lamp. The discus is decorated in high relief with a bird standing on a bough, facing right. The perimeter features regular ovolo designs. The lamp has a handle at the back and stands on a low foot.

Date: 2nd century AD
Provenance: From the collection of Arno Jumpertz, Leverkusen, Germany, 1924-1984. Much of the collection was exhibited at Neus museum, 1985.
Condition: Very Fine condition, small chip to one side edge.

Roman lamps depicting scenes on the top only became popular in the first century AD, although moulded pottery lamps had been around in Italy for over two centuries previously. The subjects of these scene varied enormously: birds were a frequent choice, but so were vegetal ornaments and pornographic scenes.
