Spouted vessels, such as this fine example, have been known as ‘beakers’, and they have been widely recovered across different Near Eastern and Western Asiatic cultures. They appeared to have been first executed by Luristan artists, under the strong influence of prevalent metal wares from the Early Iron Age in the Luristan empire. Spouted vessels of this class, might have been used as ritual objects for particular ceremonial occasions.

A finely modelled Anatolian grey ware vessel, featuring a globular body rising from a ring base. The long and prominent tubular sprout, formed in the shape of a bird’s beak, is characteristic of Anatolian spouted vessels of this class. A single applied loop handle extends from the vessel’s rim to its shouler.
Condition: Fine, complete and intact.
