The quillon (also known as a cross-guard) was a bar of metal placed at a right angle between the blade and hilt of a sword. Its primary purpose was to protect the wielder’s hand from slipping forwards onto the blade, but could also be used to counter enemy attacks, and to get a better grip on the sword. For these reasons, quillons were also present on daggers.
