Roman Applique Mould

An Ancient Roman light brown clay applique mould, featuring a rounded concave shape, with an elongated part to the exterior. The mould appears decorated on its interior surface with impressed facial features and locks of hair. This mould would have probably used in Ancient times to create finely incised appliques of male or female heads.

Clay moulds were widely used in Antiquity to make the production of appliques and statuettes faster. Moulds were decorated to their internal surface with impressed decorative designs: those intaglio motifs would then appear in low relief on any appliques or statuettes formed on it.
