The  boar plays an important role in ancient Greek and Roman culture. The boar was often associated with its capacity to destroy humans and crops, with boar hunting consequently becoming a popular pastime amongst Romans, considered to strengthen the body and mind. The boar was also used as an emblem across the Roman Empire, especially amongst the army to manifest its strength.
