Saints

Images of saints are extremely popular in Christian art where they are used to remind the viewer of their life and saintly qualities or achievements. Such use of the images of saints may have specific contexts or meanings depending on the symbolism applied to the saint based on the events of their life. Accordingly, many professions or activities have associated patron saints that are believed to be heavenly advocates of the group they represent and similarly certain images of saints may have somewhat amulets qualities associated with them. Some major saints may have distinctive physical appearances and as such do not rely on symbolism in their depiction, however the use of symbols to identify a saint is common, especially in smaller works, for example, St. Stephen is often depicted with a group of stones, being the cause of his martyrdom.
